WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE OVER UMASS

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team (11-14, 7-7 A-10) inched one step closer to securing a first round bye in the Atlantic 10 Championship by defeating UMass (12-13, 4-10 A-10) 47-42 on February 23 at the Liacouras Center. The Owls have now won five of their last six games, including the last three in a row.

Senior guard Stacey Smalls led Temple in scoring on "Senior Day" with 16 points. Smalls was the only Owl to score in double figures. Fellow senior Chrissy Cruz, who scored six points and grabbed five rebounds, had a game-high five assists. Sophomore Ari Moore led Temple in rebounding with six rebounds.

Jennifer Butler led all scorers and rebounders as she finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Butler was the only double figure scorer for UMass.

While UMAss held a decided edge in rebounding (42-30), Temple forced 20 turnovers while committing 15. The Owls also held the Minutewomen to 2-14 (14.3 percent) shooting from beyond the arc and under 30 percent shooting (28.8 percent) overall for the game.

Next up for Temple, a visit to St. Bonaventure on Thursday, February 27. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. and with a win the Owls can clinch second place in the Atlantic 10 East and a first round bye in the A-10 Championship.
