WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO GEORGE WASHINGTON IN A-10 SEMIS

3.8.03 | Women's Basketball

Kingston, R.I - The Temple women's basketball team (14-15, 9-7 A-10), the number two seed in the A-10 East lost to George Washington (23-6, 15-1 A-10), the number one overall seed 64-59 in the semifinals of the 2003 Atlantic 10 Championship on March 8. With the loss the Owls will not be invited to post season play for the first time in the Dawn Staley Era.

Senior guard Stacey Smalls saved one of her best performances for what would turn out to be her final collegiate game as she poured in a game-high 25 points to lead Temple in scoring. Junior Tynecia Pam (14 points) was the only other Owl to score in double figures. Senior Chrissy Cruz was Temple's top rebounder with nine boards.

Ugo Oha led George Washington with 24 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds. Cathy Joens (13 points) and Anna Montanana (13 points) were the other double figure scorers for the Colonials.

Temple, which trailed 32-28 at the half, closed the gap to 60-58 with 2:04 remaining on a short jumper by Pam. It would prove to be the Owls last field goal as George Washington would get a key basket and free throw from Oha to build the lead to five with just 58 ticks on the clock.

The Owls had more steals (7-5) and fewer turnovers (14-16) but they lost the battle of the boards 35-31. The Colonials also held a huge 22-10 advantage in second chance points.
