TEMPLE NAMES CARLA MCGHEE ASSISTANT WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH
7.1.03 | Women's Basketball
"Carla will most definitely be a great asset to our program," said head coach Dawn Staley. "She's going to bring a lot of energy. What she lacks in experience as a coach, she will more than make up for with her presence. I think she's a professional in every sense of the word and I know she is going to have a huge influence over our youth, our players and our community as a whole."
"I'm very excited about this opportunity because of all the enthusiasm around the women's basketball team at Temple," said McGhee. "I look forward to working with Dawn again and being a part of her vision for this program."
Prior to coming to Temple, McGhee, was a member of the WNBA's Orlando Miracle. She played in the WNBA from 1999-2002. McGhee also played professionally for the Atlanta Glory of the ABL and abroad in Germany, Spain and Italy. In addition to her accomplishments as a professional, McGhee was a member of the gold-medal-winning 1996 United States Olympic Team where she was a teammate of Staley's.
As a collegian, McGhee won two national championships at Tennessee (1987 and 1989). She was named to the 1987 Tennessean All-Freshman Team. Following her freshman campaign, McGhee was seriously injured in an automobile accident. She suffered brain injuries, broke nearly every bone in her face and was told she would never play again. After missing her sophomore season, she returned to the court and as a junior helped lead Tennessee to a 35-2 record and another National Championship.
A native of Peoria, Illinois, McGhee received her bachelor's degree in Sport Management from Tennessee in 1990. In addition to her experience as a professional athlete, she has worked as a material supervisor for General Motors, a substitute teacher and motivational speaker.
