CARTER WINS THIRD NATIONWIDE TOURNAMENT TO EARN PGA TOUR CARD FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE 2003 SEASON
9.2.03 | Men's Golf
Carter shot a 17-under 263 to win the $450,000 Alberta Calgary Classic at the par-70 9,981-yard GlenEagles Golf Club. Carter previously won the Samsung Canadian PGA Championship in late July near Toronto and won the Price Cutter Charity Championship two weeks ago in Springfield, Missouri. With the victory, Carter moved to the top spot on the money list of the Nationwide Tour overtaking Joe Ogilvie. Carter has now won $358,709 on this year's circuit.
Carter, who started the final round tied for second with Mario Tiziani and two shots behind the leader, Mike Standly, narrowed the gap to one stroke on Standly at the opening hole, driving the green on the uphill 384-yard dogleg and two-putting for birdie. He then took the lead for good when Standly double-bogeyed the par-4 second hole.
"I'm a little surprised," said Carter, who has come from behind in all three of his wins. "I got off to that good start and Mike had a few bad bounces. I guess the momentum was in my favor at that point."
From there, Carter maintained his lead, adding birdies at Nos. 4 and 6 to move 15-under and three up on his challengers. For the day, Carter hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation.
