PENN TOPS TEMPLE, 1-0, IN MEN'S SOCCER
9.24.03 | Men's Soccer
The game was scoreless at intermission with neither team able to mount much offensive pressure on goal. At the start of the second half Temple's leading scorer, junior forward Nate Webb, picked up his second yellow card of the match. So the Owls had to play a man down for the remaining 40 minutes.
Junior goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan was up to the challenge. Playing in just his third match since returning from a broken arm, Hannigan made four brilliant saves in the second half, allowing just the one goal. The Soccer Seven co-Player of the Week now has 20 saves in three matches and an impressive 0.31 goals against average.
Penn goalkeeper Matt Haefner stopped all three shots he faced in recording his second shutout of the season.
The Quakers out-shot the Owls, 13-4, including a 9-2 differential in the second half.
Temple, 4-2-1, 0-1-1 in Soccer Seven play, now has nine days off before opening Atlantic 10 Conference play with a home match against Dayton on October 3 (4:00 p.m.). Penn, 2-2-1, 1-0-0, next travels to La Salle for a Soccer Seven match with the Explorers on September 28 (1:00 p.m.).
