DAYTON, OHIO -- After playing four straight overtime contests, David MacWillliams would have loved an extra frame for his Temple men's soccer team Sunday afternoon. Instead, the host Flyers tallied twice in the final four minutes to pull out the come-from-behind, 2-1 win over the Owls.
After a scoreless first half, things picked up midway through the second half when Temple's leading scorer, freshman Stephen Bristow, picked up his second yellow card of the contest in the 64th minute and was subsequently ejected.
Ironically, it was the Owls that first capitalized on their short-handed status. Junior Nicke Ebersole was fouled in the box, setting up a Temple penalty kick. Senior captain Steven Wacker converted in the 66th minute to put the Owls ahead, 1-0.
The Cherry and White defense held the Flyers at bay over the next 20 minutes until being whistled for a foul inside the box with 4:01 remaining. UD's Tye Stebbins was true on the penalty kick to tie the game. Less than a minute later, Nate Darr headed home a crossing pass from George Nanchoff to lift the Flyers to the comeback win.
Patrick Hannigan made six saves in goal for Temple while Matt Troop posted three saves for UD.
Senior forward Nate Webb continues to be bothered by a back injury. The Owls' leading scorer with 11 goals in 2003, Webb could play just 10 minutes in the contest after being able to compete just 25 minutes in Friday's tie with Xavier.
Temple, 4-6-2, 1-1-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, next travels to La Salle for a 3:00 p.m. match on Friday, October 15. Dayton improves to 6-4-1, 3-1 in league play.
