AMBLER, PA -- Sophomore Chris Shelton tallied the first goal of his career in the 10th minute of play and the Temple defense made it stand up as the Owls defeated Duquesne, 1-0, on Ambler Field Friday afternoon.  The win improved Temple's record to 7-6-2 and 4-1-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.  Duquesne, which entered the contest in first place in the A-10, falls to 9-6-0, 5-2-0.

Shelton, a defense back, slipped behind a wall of Duke defenders off a direct kick and took a pass from junior Tony Donatelli in front of the goal.  The Sewell, NJ native finished the ball past sophomore keeper Tony Varga (five saves).

The Owl defense, which has allowed just 1.17 goals against average on the season, held the Dukes to nine total shots, including just one in the second half.  Senior Patrick Hannigan made four saves in recording his fourth shutout of the season and 16th of his career.  Senior Andy Watto, juniors Joe Brocker and Timmy Greer along with Shelton provided solid defense in front of Hannigan.

Temple played its third straight match without its leading scorer, freshman Stephen Bristow (11 points).  The New Castle, England native was sidelined with a knee injury.  His status is day-to-day.

Senior Nate Webb, who has been hampered all season with a back injury, played 80 minutes in the contest.  It was the most time he has spent on the field all season.

The contest was a rematch of last year's A-10 semifinal which saw the Owls advance on penalty kicks, 1-1 (5-4).  Duquesne, which has not allowed more than one goal in any A-10 match this year, had its four-game win streak snapped.  It was the Dukes' first conference road game of the year.

Temple, winners of three straight matches, will play its fourth and final home match of the season on Sunday when it hosts St. Bonaventure at 1:00 p.m.  That match will serve at the Owls' Senior Day as the team honors its four seniors, Hannigan, Steven Wacker, Watto and Webb.
