EBERSOLE'S LATE GOAL LIFTS MEN'S SOCCER TO VICTORY OVER RICHMOND

10.31.04 | Men's Soccer

RICHMOND, VA -- It may not have been sudden victory, but it felt like that for the Temple men's soccer team when junior Nick Ebersole finished a touch pass from junior Tony Donatelli in front of the Richmond goal with just 27 seconds to play in the contest to lead the Owls to a 1-0 win in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Temple clinches its second straight winning season and trip to the A-10 Tournament.  The Owls are now 9-7-2 overall and 6-2-2 in league play.   Richmond falls to 3-12-2 and 2-7-1, respectively.

Donatelli took a pass in front of the Spider net and fired a shot on UR keeper Eric Sciocchetti from point blank range.   Sciocchetti, who made 10 saves in the contest, was up to the challenge, but was unable to control the rebound which came right back to Donatelli.  The Owl midfielder deftly distributed to Ebersole on his right flank for his team-leading sixth assist of the season.  Ebersole found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Senior keeper Patrick Hannigan made five saves in the contest to notch his sixth shutout of the season.  He has only been scored upon once over the last 511 minutes.

Temple had the better of the play offensively, out-shooting Richmond 21-7 in the match.  The Owls also took eight corner kicks while the Spiders did not attempt a corner.

The game was extremely physical with each team receiving four yellow cards.  The Owls played a man-down the final 10 minutes as freshman Stephen Bristow, the team's leading scorer (11 points), picked up his second yellow card of the match in the 80th minute.  Bristow will now have to sit out the team's regular season finale at Saint Joseph's (Nov. 6, 7:00 p.m.)

If Temple defeats Saint Joseph's and Dayton, currently second in the A-10 standings, falls at rival Xavier (Nov. 6, 7:00 p.m.), the Owls will finish in second place and earn an all-important bye in the A-10 Tournament.  Currently in third place in the A-10 race, the lowest the Owls can end up is fourth in the six-team field.
