11.10.04 | General
PHILADELPHIA (11/11/04) -- The first 10,000 fans in attendance at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday (Nov. 13) for Temple's 12 noon football game versus Syracuse will receive a collectible 11x17 poster featuring the four Owls that were prominent in the U.S. capturing gold medals at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. Saturday is also the first annual PAL Day at Temple Football, presented by The Donovan McNabb Foundation and Athole Jacobi M.D.
At halftime of Saturday's game, current Temple head women's basketball coach Dawn Staley, former oarsman Jason Read ('03) and former gymnast Miles Avery ('81) will be honored for their gold medal performances in Athens, Greece this past summer. Staley was selected flag bearer and won her third gold medal in women's basketball, Read was a member of the men's elite eight that ended a 40-year gold medal drought in crew and Avery coached Paul Hamm to the first American all-around competition gold medal. Pepe Sanchez ('00), who guided the Argentina men's basketball team to gold, is also featured on the poster but will not be present as he is playing professionally in Spain.
A special section of more than 500 representatives from the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia will be attending Saturday's game due to the generosity of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, a Syracuse alum, and his foundation. Members of the group will take part in a flag football competition prior to the game.
For over 57 years, Philadelphia PAL has been "Cops Helping Kids." Saturday's presenters are Wilma McNabb and Sam McNabb, as well as Athole Jacobi, M.D. and M. Mark Mendel, Esq. Checks totaling $20,000 will be presented to PAL Commanding Officer Lt. Susan Slawson and PAL Chairman Derrick Roman. These contributions will support educational and athletic programs at PAL's 26 centers across the city.
