WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS SHORT AT RHODE ISLAND, 60-59

2.1.04 | Women's Basketball

KINGSTON, R.I. - Four Owls scored in double figures, yet the Temple women's basketball team fell to Rhode Island, 60-59 on February 1 at the Ryan Center. The loss is Temple's first in Atlantic 10 Conference play this season.

Freshman forward Kamesha Hairston scored 10 points and had career-highs in rebounds (five), assists (four) and steals (four) for the Owls. She was joined in double figures by fellow freshman Britney Jordan, sophomore Candice Dupree and junior Cynthia Jordan with 10 points each.

Senior guards Shayla Johnson and Denise King led the Rams with 15 points apiece. Tanya Rhodes and Katie Stailing rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points each.

The game was a battle throughout and when Temple (11-8, 7-1 A-10) tied up Rhode Island (11-9, 4-5 A-10) on the alternating posession with four seconds left to play, it looked as if the Owls might pull out another squeaker. However, Britney Jordan's final shot fell short and Temple fell from the ranks of undefeated A-10 teams.

Two statistics jump off the page in this Temple loss; free throw shooting and rebounding. Rhode Island won the battle of the boards, 35-26 and the Owls were just 2-10 from the charity stripe while the Rams were 16-19.

Next up for Temple another road game as the Owls visit Dayton on Friday, February 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
