DENTON, TX -- The Temple University women's gymnastics assistant coach, Aaron Murphy, was named Women's Assistant Coach of the Year at the USA Gymnastics National Collegiate Championships in Denton, Texas on Saturday, April 10. Murphy is the first assistant coach in Temple women's gymnastics history to earn the honor.

In his second season as an assistant to Head Coach Ken Anderson, Murphy has played an active role in leading the Owls to a 14-14 overall record. In the past two seasons, Temple qualified for the USAG National Collegiate Gymnastics Championships and placed fourth. Under the direction of Anderson and Murphy, six members of the Cherry and White squad have earned USAG All-America status on individual events.

In addition to his coaching position with the women's team, Murphy currently serves as a level seven, six, and five coach for Temple's boys' club, which primes youth for USA level gymnastics. He also instructs a gymnastics class in the department of kinesiology at Temple.

Murphy served as the director of the Temple University Gymnastics Clinic in 2001 and 2002.

Murphy competed for the Owls as a member of the men's gymnastics team from 1997-2001. In the summer of 2001 Murphy competed at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships held at The Liacouras Center. Following the 2001 season, his team voted him the "most consistent" gymnast.

A 2002 graduate of Temple University, Murphy earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood education.
