OWLS IN FOURTH PLACE AFTER ROUND ONE OF A-10 GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

MIDDLETOWN, RI --Temple is in fourth place after shooting a 307 on day one of the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship at the Newport National Golf Club. Rhode Island leads the field of 11 with a team total of 294 strokes, fueled by a four-under 68 by event leader David Spitz.

Spitz made two birdies and an eagle on the back nine of the par 72, 7,244-yard course and totaled four birdies on the afternoon. Kyle Hess of Richmond and Andy Pope of Xavier each shot a 71 in breezy conditions to finish tied for second. Temple senior team captain James Chan is tied for fifth after carding a 74 on Friday.

Rhode Island leads defending A-10 Champion Xavier (297) by three strokes, followed by Richmond at 299. George Washington rounds out the top five at 309.

The three-day Championship resumes play on Saturday at 8:00 am. The final round will be played on Sunday, May 2, when an A-10 team champion and individual medalist will be crowned. The Atlantic 10 team champion receives an automatic bid into the 2004 NCAA Golf Championship.
