OWLS IN SIXTH PLACE ENTERING FINAL ROUND OF A-10 GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

MIDDLETOWN, R.I.-Temple is in sixth place with a 619 team score heading into the third and final round of the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship at Newport National Golf Club. The Owls slipped two places after Friday's opening round 307 by shooting a 312 Saturday on the par 72, 7,457-yard course.
Junior Matt Roberts was Temple's top performer on Saturday, carding a 76 after posting an 81 on Friday. Senior team captain James Chan shot a 78 after an opening round 74 to position himself in 11th place entering the final 18 holes. Chan, the 2003 A-10 Golf Student Athlete of the Year, has finished among the top 10 in each of his first three conference tournaments and was an all-league honoree as a freshman and junior.
Defending champion Xavier is in first place with a 587 after posting a tournament-best 290 on Saturday. Host Rhode Island is one stroke behind (294-294=588), with Richmond (299-302=601) in third place, 14 shots off the pace. Xavier's Andy Pope is the individual leader with a three-under par 141 (71-70).
The Championship resumes play tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. The tournament champion receives an automatic berth into the 2004 NCAA Golf Championship.
