OWLS FINISH TIED FOR SIXTH AT A-10 GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

MIDDLETOWN, R.I.-Temple finished tied for sixth place with a 924 team score at the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship, held at Newport National Golf Club, April 30-May 2. The Owls saved their best round for last, shooting a 305 on Sunday after 307 and 312-stroke efforts Friday and Saturday, respectively, on the par 72, 7,457-yard course.
Host Rhode Island won the team title with a 883 (294-294-295) score, edging defending champion Xavier (297-290-297=884) by one stroke, courtesy of an four-foot putt by senior David Spitz on the 18th hole Sunday. Xavier's Andy Pope won the individual crown by one stroke over Spitz in a playoff.
Senior team captain James Chan, an all-league honoree as a freshman and junior, paced the Owls with a 13-over par 229 (74-78-77) to finish tied for 18th place. The 2003 A-10 Golf Student Athlete of the Year, Chan placed among the top 20 in each of his four career league championship tournaments.
Junior Patrick O'Neill provided a team tournament-best round of 73 on Sunday to conclude the event tied for 22nd with a 230 overall score. Billy Mullen (T-28th, 233), Matt Roberts (T-43rd, 239) and Logan Terry (46th, 240) comprised the rest of the Cherry & White tournament scorecard.
Fordham's Paul Dillon was named the Conference Coach of the Year after leading his team to a fourth-place finish, its highest finish ever in the Atlantic 10. Xavier's Jason Kokrak was named the Most Outstanding Rookie for his third place showing.
