MEN'S SOCCER OPENS AMBLER FIELD WITH 6-0 EXHIBITION WIN OVER BARBADOS
8.23.04 | Men's Soccer
AMBLER, PA - The Temple University men's soccer team christened its new Ambler Field in grand fashion, dispatching the Barbados Soccer Club, 6-0, in exhibition play Monday night.
Nate Webb and Matt Maher tallied two goals each for the Owls which dominated play all evening.
Webb, who led the Cherry & White with 11 goals last year, opened the scoring early on, stealing the ball in front of the Barbados goal and blasting one past keeper Omari Eastmond (nine saves) at the three-minute mark. Tony Donatelli, who tallied seven times last year, scored with eight minutes to play in the first half on an assist by freshman Kevin McSherry to make it 2-0.
Webb notched his second tally four minutes into the second half and the floodgates opened eight minutes later when freshman Matt McClain finished a nice cross from McSherry with a bicycle kick. Maher ended the scoring with goals 10 minutes apart near the end of the contest.
Two newcomers, Tony Pratico and Michael Birnbaum, split time in goal for the Owls as All-America Candidate Patrick Hannigan sat out the contest. Neither Owl keeper was tested as Temple out-shot Barbados, 21-2.
The Owls next play Saturday when they meet Villanova in the first-ever Soccer Seven Play Day. The two rivals square off at the Ukraine Soccer Club at 3:00 p.m.
