MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO HOFSTRA, 1-0, AT LIU TOURNAMENT

LONG ISLAND, NY - The Temple University men's soccer team, playing without its entire starting defensive backfield, took Hofstra into overtime before allowing a goal, but that was all it took as the Pride downed the Owls, 1-0, in opening round play of the Long Island University Tournament.

Hofstra's Brandon Quaranta scored the game-winner in the 92nd minute. A throw-in led to the score as Temple goalie Patrick Hannigan came out of the penalty box to punch a loose ball only to deliver directly to Quaranta and the senior drilled a hard shot into the right corner.

The Owls, scoreless over three matches on the season, were missing senior Tony Viglietti and junior Joe Brocker, both red-carded at the end of the team's loss to North Carolina State last weekend. Two other defenders, junior Timmy Greer and sophomore Chris Shelton, were missing due to injury.

Offensively, the Owls were without the services of senior Nate Webb. The team's leading scorer with 11 goals in 2003, Webb is out indefinitely with a back injury.

Hannigan was strong in goal for the Owls, making seven saves in the contest. Hofstra netminder Matthias Gumbrecht recorded two.

The Pride outshot the Owls, 21-7, including 9-1 in the second half.

Temple falls to 0-3 on the season while Hofstra improves to 3-1. The tournament continues Sunday, September 12 with Hofstra facing Pittsburgh, which played to a scoreless tie with LIU, at 12:00. Host LIU will tangle with Temple at 2:30 p.m.
