TITLE REMATCH PROVIDES SETTING FOR GRAND OPENING OF AMBLER SOCCER FIELD

9.30.04 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA  -- The setting could not be better for the Grand Opening of Temple University's Ambler Soccer Field. The Temple men's soccer team will take the field against defending Atlantic 10 Champion Rhode Island Friday afternoon in a rematch of the conference title game. Prior to the start of the contest a ceremony will take place to officially open the beautiful grass field on the University's Ambler Campus.

Temple University Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw and Dr. Sophia Wisniewska, Dean of Temple's Ambler Campus, will make remarks prior to a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring the senior members of the Temple men's soccer team. The Owls, 3-5 on the season, will then take the field for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff against the Rams (5-3) in the conference opener for both teams. URI defeated Temple, 3-1, in the 2003 Atlantic 10 Championship match at the University of Richmond.

Head coach David MacWilliams, in his fifth year at the helm of the Temple program, has one of the top defensive units in the A-10, led by senior goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan and junior sweeper Joe Brocker. The two were both named to the 2003 Second Team All-Region. Offensively, the Owls are led by freshman Stephen Bristow (2 goals). Senior Nate Webb, who tallied 11 goals last year, has missed all but one game this season due to a back injury. His status is questionable for the Rhode Island match.

In his 16th year at the URI helm, Ed Bradley will be in search of career win number 200 when his Ram team takes the field Friday. Senior forward Sasha Gotsmanov leads the A-10 with eight goals and two assists for 18 points.
