MEN'S SOCCER FALLS AT NC STATE, 1-0
9.5.04 | Men's Soccer
Raleigh, NC -- The Temple men's soccer team did not fare well on its trip down Tobacco Road Labor Day weekend. After falling to Duke Saturday, 3-0, the Owls fared better at North Carolina State, but still came away with a loss. The Wolfpack avenged its 2003 home loss to the Owls with a 1-0 win Sunday at Method Road.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half, until NC State's Federico Peria notched the game's only goal in the 62nd minute. Peria stole the ball from an Owl defender and found himself one-on-one with Temple's keeper Patrick Hannigan. Peria slotted the ball into the lower left corner of the goal for his third score of the season.
Neither team scored in the first 45 minutes, but there were plenty of chances as NC State recorded nine shots to the Owls' six shots on goal. Peria nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 17th minute as his shot hit the upper cross bar. Temple's Nick Ebersole then came right back down the field and put a hard shot on net, only to be denied by NC State's Jorge Gonzalez.
Gonzalez earned the shutout with his five saves. For Temple, freshman Tony Pratico and Hannigan played 45 minutes and each recorded two saves.
The Owls, 0-2, will next take on Hofstra on Friday, September 10 (5:00 p.m.) in the Long Island Tournament. Temple will be without the services of sweeper back Joe Brocker in that match as he received a red card in the 89th minute of play.
