DAWN STALEY TO RECEIVE 2005 WOMAN ONE AWARD

Staley was chosen not only because of her athletic achievements but because of her work with the Dawn Staley Foundation. The Foundation provides a series of programs in North Philadelphia that encourage young people to pursue healthy lifestyles. Basketball clinics and after school programs designed to empower young women with the necessary education and life skills to become responsible and proactive community leaders through academics, sport activity, and community outreach highlight the Foundation's curriculum.

The award will be presented on April 28th in a ceremony at Philadelphia's DoubleTree Hotel from 5:00-8:30 p.m. Money will be raised to provide scholarships for minority women to attend Drexel University's College of Medicine. Additional grants from WOMAN ONE will be made for special research in women's health and to the Dawn Staley Foundation.

WOMAN ONE was started in 2003 by The Institute for Women's Health and Leadership, which is an organizational Unit of the Drexel University College of Medicine that advances women's health through education, leadership development, clinical care, research and public awareness. It has earned designation from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service as a National Center of Excellence in Women's Health.

Temple Head Coach Dawn Staley has been chosen as the recipient of the 2005 WOMAN ONE Award in recognition of her extradinary community and public service endeavors. The WOMAN ONE Award in presented annually to "the woman who, by the influence of her actions and the excellence of her example, inspires women of all ages to reach for the highest standards of health and human behavior." Previous award winners include public service leader Estelle Richman and Leslie Miller, an advocate for justice and community excellence.
