BRIDGEPORT, CT - Temple women's gymnastics opened its 2005 season with a 181.275-176.850 victory over Bridgeport in a dual meet on Wednesday, January 12 at the Wheeler Recreation Center. The Owls won three of four events as senior Alexis Zafferes posted a meet-best 9.550 score on vault during the initial rotation to begin the competition in Temple style.
Fellow seniors Cheryl Cerminaro and Erin Davis followed suit winning bars and beam, with 9.350 and 9.450 scores respectively, as Temple had individual winners on three of four apparatus. Temple collectively posted 12 individual scores of 9.000 or better while 14 student-athletes competed for the Cherry & White.
Bridgeport's Sarah Hansen won the all-around competition with a 36.000 score while teammate Kate Warner posted the best score on floor exercise with a 9.400 effort. Temple did not field an all-around competitor.
The Owls' best score was on vault with a 45.925, followed by beam (45.800), bars (45.275) and the floor exercise (44.275). Bridgeport won floor with a 45.300 showing and posted scores of 44.650 on vault, 42.025 on bars and 44.875 on beam.
Temple, under the direction of 20-year head Ken Anderson, returns to action this Sunday, Jan. 16, at the George Washington Invitational in Washington, D.C.
