TEMPLE WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS PLACES FIFTH AT GW INVITATIONAL

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Temple women's gymnastics team placed fifth out of seven schools with a 183.725 score at the George Washington Invitational on Sunday, January 16, at the Smith Center. North Carolina swept all four events and had the individual champion on each apparatus to finish first with a 190.850 score. Towson claimed second with a mark of 188.375, while the host Colonial placed third (187.000).

The Owls' best event finish belonged to senior Erin Davis, who placed tied for fifth on beam with a 9.450 effort. Junior Lindsey Stern also contributed a top 10 performance, tying for ninth on bars with a 9.350. The team's highest event score, for the second time in as many meets, was earned by senior Alexis Zafferes, who finished 11th on vault with a 9.725.

Temple's best event was the vault, where the team posted a 48.125 team score to finish fourth. The Owls placed fifth on beam (46.175), tied for fifth on bars (45.325) and sixth in the floor exercise (44.100).

UNC All-American Courtney Bumpers was the all-around winner with a total of 38.900, while her teammates Mikel Hester (38.275) and Olivia Trusty (38.200) finished second and third, respectively. The Owls did not field an all-around competitor, as 13 student-athletes performed in Cherry & White.

Temple (3-4), under the direction of 20-year head coach Ken Anderson, returns to action Saturday versus Ursinus in Collegeville, Pa in a 1:00 p.m. dual meet versus the Bears.
