TEMPLE WOMEN WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT WITH A 73-64 VICTORY OVER HAMPTON

PHILADELPHIA-Senior Cynthia Jordan scored 16 points and Candice Dupree and Kamesha Hairston chipped in with 15 points a piece to lead the Temple Owls to a 73-64 win over the visiting Hampton Lady Pirates on Sunday afternoon at the Liacouras Center. The Owls are now 8-3 on the season while the Lady Pirates fall to 3-8.
Hairston started off the scoring with a free throw for the Owls 20 seconds into the first half, which was answered by a lay-up by Kiesha Beard. A steal by Jordan and a lay-up by Khadija Bowens gave the Owls a 10-point lead with 10:25 remaining. Rachel Butler and Beard led the Lady Pirates in battling back against the Owls closing the 10-point defifcit down to five point at 5:15. Dupree and Jordan kept the pressure on however, finishing the first half with eight points each and allowing the Owls to take a 38-26 advantage into the half.
Hampton started off the second half scoring on a jumper by Brendy Ellis, but Hairston sank two free throws to make the score, 40-31. Hairston led the Owls in second half scoring with 10 points, while Jordan and Dupree assisted with six and five points each to lead Temple to its fifth straight victory.
Dupree added a game-high of 12 rebounds to her 15 points, earning her fourth double-double of the season, while Jordan had a game-high nine assists to compliment her 16 points.
Butler and Beard led Hampton in scoring with 20 and 19 points, respectively.
The Owls begin Atlantic 10 play on Tuesday, January 4th when they take on UMass at the Liacouras Center (7:00 p.m.). Head coach Dawn Staley will receive her 2004 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year award at the game.
