PHILADELPHIA -- Senior defender Timmy Greer used his head -- literally -- to lead the Temple Owls to a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's in an Atlantic 10/Soccer 7 men's soccer match held at Finnesey Field in a torrential downpour Saturday evening. The Owls improved to 4-10 overall, 2-3 in A-10 play while the Hawks dropped to 2-10-1, 0-5.
Greer became the hero of the game when he headed out a shot by SJU's Tommy Johnson in the closing seconds that would have tied the contest. Johnson took a shot from the right wing that Greer deflected to preserve the win.
Temple opened the scoring in the 34th minute when senior Tony Donatelli scored his team-high fifth goal. Donatelli took a cross in the box from freshman Will Chevrollier and headed it past Hawk keeper Rob Lavorerio (3 saves).
David Suah made it 2-0 Temple when he received a long pass from Matt Maher and took it the distance, lobbing a shot over the head of a charging Lavorerio in the78th minute. Johnson scored four minutes later off an assist from Andrew Tursi to cut the Owl lead to 2-1.
Temple then held on to end its "official" Soccer 7 slate with a perfect 2-0 record. SJU ended its Soccer 7 campaign at 1-1.
The Owls now end the season with four straight A-10 conference home matches. Temple hosts St. Bonaventure at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
