#20 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS UP WITH 86-49 EXHIBITION WIN OVER NY/NJ GAZELLES

PHILADELPHIA- Sophomore Lady Comfort led six players in double figures with a career-high 15 points as the 20th-ranked Temple women's basketball team opened up the 2005-06 season with an 86-49 win over the NY/NJ Gazelles on Monday night in McGonigle Hall. Comfort grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, a tally she held with senior All-America candidate Candice Dupree. Dupree added 14 points, four steals, four assists and two blocks to her solid performance.

The Gazelles were able to keep up pace with the Owls in the opening minutes of the contest but an 11-0 run gave Temple a 15-6 lead by the 12 minute mark. A jumper by Tornonda Hayes ended the Gazelles scoring drought but TU opened back up with a 13-2 run to end the half with a 32-17 advantage.

A Khadija Bowens jumper began the half that was all Temple. The Owls increased their lead to as much as 39 points before the final buzzer sounded with an 86-49 result.

Kamesha Hairston also netted in double figures with 12, adding eight boards, four assists and two blocks, while Bowens and Ashley Morris chipped in with 10 points a piece. Lone freshman Shenita Landry had an impressive debut, totaling 11 points, three blocks and five rebounds in just 19 minutes of play.

Shamika Stevens was the only Gazelle to reach double figures with 13.

Temple travels to Eugene, Oregon for the season opener at the Women's Sports Foundation Classic, held at the University of Oregon, November 11-12. The Owls will face Michigan on Friday, November 11 at 5 p.m. Pacific time and either Oregon or Saint Francis on November 12 at 5 or 7 p.m.
