TEMPLE TRACK TEAMS TO COMPETE AT ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS ON SATURDAY
2.18.05 | Women's Track and Field
PHILADELPHIA - Seniors Rachel Clinton and Jonathan Albright will look for their third straight championship in the 55m hurdles, respectively, at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House. Temple, under first-year head coach Stefanie Scalessa, is looking to improve upon last season's seventh place finishes. The men's championship begins at 9:45 a.m., while the women's championship commences at 2:30 p.m.
Rhode Island's women's team amassed a Championship-record 186 points en route to winning its fourth title in the past five seasons in 2004 and seeks to defend its title behind defending 200m dash champion Rachel Oakes. Senior Rachel Clinton of Temple seeks her third consecutive gold medal in the 55m hurdles while Saint Joseph's juniors Thuy Nguyen and Andria Smythe look to defend their titles in the 800m and 55m dash, respectively. The high jump begins the women's portion of the Championship at 2:30 pm with Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Temple and Xavier contending for the title.
Rhode Island's men's squad won its third-ever Atlantic 10 title last season, outdistancing second place and 2003 champion La Salle, 199-173. The Rams are led by sophomore Ashhad Agyapong, who garnered Most Outstanding Rookie honors last year after winning the 500m and is a two-time A-10 Performer of the Week selection this season. URI senior Andre Reid seeks his third gold medal in the shot put while sophomore Reshard Hicks attempts to defend his high jump title.
The high jump kicks off the men's Championship at 9:45 pm with Fordham, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Temple and Xavier in the hunt. The 2005 Championship marks the first year of competition for Xavier in men's and women's indoor track & field.
