WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS PLACES THIRD AT TOWSON INVITATIONAL

TOWSON, MD -- The Temple women's gymnastics team finished third with a 188.025 score Saturday afternoon at the 20th annual Towson Invitational at the Towson Center. The host Tigers won the competition with a 193.600 score, as Penn (190.125) finished second, Ursinus (184.800) fourth and James Madison (182.800) placed fifth.

 

Senior Alexis Zafferes provided the Owls' best event finish, posting a 9.625 on vault to finish tied for third in the event. Fellow upperclassman Erin Davis and freshman Christine McNeill also performed well, turning-in 9.650 efforts on bars to finish tied for fifth on the apparatus.

 

On beam, Temple's top score was shared by three competitors, as Lindsey Stern, Kristin McRell and Cheryl Cerminaro all earned scores of 9.650. Alycia Petitto provided the Cherry & White's top performance in the floor exercise with a 9.500.

 

Towson earned individual crowns in three of four events. Christine Logan won the vault with a 9.775 score, Juliya Kovaliova finished first on bars (9.90) and Stacie Hogan won the floor exercise (9.775).  On the balance beam, Penn's Leah Moon finished first with a 9.750 effort, while teammate Emily Petkun captured the all-around with a 38.300 total.

 

Temple (9-11) did not field an all-around competitor.

 

The Owls, under the direction of 20th-year head coach Ken Anderson, return to action next Sunday evening (Feb. 27) in a quad meet at McGonigle Hall featuring Ursinus, West Chester and Japan National at 7:30 p.m.
