STALEY TO RING OPENING BELL AT PHILADELPHIA STOCK EXCHANGE ON FRIDAY
2.3.05 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- Dawn Staley, head coach of the Temple University women's basketball team, member of the WNBA's Charlotte Sting and three-time Olympic gold medal winner, will ring the opening bell on the floor of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange on Friday, February 4.
Staley is partnering with the American Heart Association to kick off "Go Red For Women," a nationwide initiative that encourages women to take charge of their heart health, making it a top priority to live stronger, longer lives. Philadelphia area women can help create awareness of women's No. 1 killer by wearing red on Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, National Wear Red Day. They can also show their support by taking part in local heart health and stroke screenings that will be held throughout February, American Heart Month.
This event marks the fourth bell ringing ceremony in a yearlong series of special openings at the nation's first stock exchange.
A native of Philadelphia, Staley was USA Today's National High School Player of the Year as a senior in 1988 and led Dobbins Tech to three consecutive Philadelphia Public League championships. She was a three time Kodak all-America player as a guard for the University of Virginia, leading the Cavaliers to a 110-21 record and three NCAA Final Four appearances in her four years there.
Staley has played professional basketball in both the WNBA and ABL, as well for teams in France, Italy, Brazil and Spain. She helped lead the U.S. to gold medals in the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics. In the 2004 Olympics in Athens, she was selected to lead the U.S. team into Opening Ceremonies as the bearer of the American flag.
