ATLANTA, Ga.- Dawn Staley, who has led the Temple women to their most successful season in school history, was named as one of the 20 finalists for the Naismith Award, presented annually to the top men's and women's college basketball coaches of the year.
The top 20 list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. The board based its criteria on coaching performance this season.
Staley, who earned the 2004-05 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Award, is in good company as the elite list also includes UConn's Geno Auriemma, LSU's Pokey Chatman, Tennessee's Pat Summitt, Notre Dame's Muffet McGraw and Rutgers' C. Vivian Stringer, to name a few.
The winner will be selected later this month and honored at the Naismith Awards Banquet on April 8 in Atlanta.
