ANNAPOLIS, MD - Temple senior team captain Billy Mullen carded a two round, two under par 140 (70-70) to win the individual crown at the Navy Spring Invitational, played April 16-17 at the United States Naval Academy Golf Club. The Norristown, Pa. native trailed by one stroke after the opening round, but surpassed Guilford's Colin Clark (69-73=172) on Sunday to win the title by two strokes in the 105-player field.
The tournament victory is the first of Mullen's career and marks his ninth top ten finish in Cherry & White. He is the first Owl to win an individual tourney crown since current senior Patrick O'Neill captured the Scotty Duncan Memorial in April 2004.
Mullen has been Temple's top finisher in each of its four tournaments this spring.
Temple shot a 612 (309-303) to finish eighth in the 20-team tournament, played on the par 71, 6,556-yard course. Guilford posted a 594 (291-303) team score to win the Invitational, five strokes ahead of second place George Washington (298-301=599). City rival Villanova finished ninth with a 614 (310-304) total.
O'Neill was Temple's next best performer, shooting a 157 (80-77) to finish tied for 57th. Senior Matt Roberts (80-78) and sophomores Logan Terry (80-78) and James Boose (79-79) all carded 158's to finish tied for 60th to round-out the Cherry & White scorecard.
