STALEY NOMINATED FOR 2004-05 JOHN WANAMAKER ATHLETIC AWARD

PHILADELPHIA- Women's basketball Head Coach Dawn Staley has been nominated for the 2004-05 John Wanamaker Athletic Award, given annually to an athlete or team "that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and their team or sport" during the past year.
Staley, a three-time Olympic gold medal winner and WNBA star, not only carried the American flag in the 2004 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony but she also led the Temple women's basketball team to it's best season in school history.
Staley joins the NFC champion Eagles; world champion boxer Bernard Hopkins; Phillies first baseman Jim Thome; Sixers star Allen Iverson; Villanova men's basketball team; and the U.S. men's heavyweight rowing team, which won Olympic gold in the event for the first time since 1964 on the list of nominees.
An annual Community Service Award is bestowed each year as well.
The Wanamaker and Community Service awards are presented by the Philadelphia Sports Congress, a division of the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The Wanamaker and Community Service awards are selected by a panel of media members and representatives of the athletic and corporate communities. The awards are presented by the Sports Congress, IPC/Amerimar Wanamaker Management Co., the Daily News and KYW CBS-3 TV.
