OWLS FINISH SEVENTH AT WEATHER-SHORTENED A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP

5.8.05 | Men's Golf

MIDDLETOWN, RI - The Temple men's golf team finished seventh with a 27-hole, 38-over par, 470 score at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championship, played Friday at Newport National Golf Club. Due to high winds and inclement weather, Saturday and Sunday's scheduled rounds of the tournament were cancelled. Final results were based on Friday's opening round, which was extended to 27 holes in anticipation of poor conditions.

Sophomore James Boose was the Owls' top performer, carding a 113 (76-37) through 27 holes to finish tied for 13th in the 55-player field. Logan Terry was the team's next best competitor, placing tied for 25th with a 117 (75-42) effort. Billy Mullen (82-40=122; t-40th), Patrick O'Neill (82-40=122; t-40th) and Matt Roberts (87-38=125; 49th) comprised the rest of the Cherry & White scorecard.

Xavier won the title in commanding, 25-shot, fashion over second place George Washington with a five-under 427. The Musketeers, who are ranked No. 35 in the country, had three players finish in the top four. Jason Kokrak tied the course record with a 67 in the initial round and completed the 1.5-round event with teammate Neal Grusczynski at 106 (-2) to share the individual crown. Andy Connell finished two strokes back at even-par to tie for third place with Rhode Island's Chad Spencer.

Defending A-10 champion URI, the tournament host, finished in third place at the par-72, 7,244-yard course. The Rams turned-in a 21-over par 452 through 27 holes, one stroke behind the second-place Colonials.

Temple, George Washington, St. Bonaventure, La Salle and Duquesne all completed 36 holes on Friday. Dayton, Fordham, Saint Joseph's, Rhode Island, Richmond and Xavier were unable to finish two full rounds on day one, completing 27, and were set to tee off at 8:00 a.m. Saturday. Inclement weather, however, prohibited play on both Saturday and Sunday. Results were based on the common denominator of Friday's 27 holes.

The Championship was the final event of the season for a Temple team that is under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Rogers. The tournament also marked the final collegiate event for a trio of seniors, as Mullen, O'Neill and Roberts all headed for the club house for the final time in Cherry & White late Friday afternoon.
