TEMPLE SCORES WELL WITH NEW NCAA ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE (APR) DATA
5.9.05 | General
PHILADELPHIA -- The NCAA released its new Academic Progress Rate numbers on Monday, May 9 and, as expected, Temple University's APR is much higher than was initially released on February 28, 2005. The University's overall APR is 942, which is well above the NCAA minimum of 925, and also above the average for public institutions (941).
"We take pride in our mission of educating student-athletes and this new report validates that we are doing an excellent job," states Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "On April 27 we honored nearly 40 percent of our student-athletes for earning 3.0 or above cumulative grade point averages at our Annual Breakfast of Champions. That is the real scoreboard that we measure success in regards to
Six Temple athletic teams -- men's and women's tennis; men's and women's track; women's soccer and field hockey -- recorded perfect APR scores of 1000. Nineteen of the University's 20 athletic teams would not be subject to contemporaneous scholarship penalties. Men's Soccer, which previously had been reported to be below the cutoff rate, boasted a 955 APR under the new numbers issued by the NCAA.
Baseball, men's and women's basketball and men's golf all scored below the 925 minimum, but would not be subject to penalties once the confidence boundary rule is applied. For teams with fewer members, like men's basketball, a squad-size adjustment usually will minimize the impact of a non-returning athlete. Because these teams' rosters are so small, the NCAA allows for a "confidence interval," an approximate range in which the actual score likely falls. The confidence boundary for smaller squads is larger, and they can only be suspended if the upper confidence boundary falls below 925.
Universities' and teams' APRs are based on a 1000-point scale. The NCAA settled upon a score of 925 as the minimum threshold based on the association's formula for determining graduation rates. A score of 925 means a team has a 50 percent graduation rate.
