CANDICE DUPREE CHOSEN AS CANDIDATE FOR WOMEN'S WOODEN AWARD
8.12.05 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Temple University senior Candice Dupree has been tabbed as one of the 30 candidates for the 2005-06 John R. Wooden Women's Award. The list is comprised of 30 student athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most coveted trophy. Dupree is currently competing with USA Basketball's World University Games team in Imzir, Turkey.
Dupree, who led Temple to its best season in program history, was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American and the Atlantic 10 Conference's Player of the Year after averaging 16.3 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game. The 2005 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Dupree helped the Owls to a #15 National Ranking and the nation's best winning streak, which reached 25 games before ending in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The 6-2 center repeated at Most Outstanding Player of the A-10 Tournament and on the All-Tournament Team, becoming just second player in Conference history to earn back-to-back MOP honors. She also received the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Year title and was selected First Team All-A-10, to the A-10 All-Defensive Team and First Team All-Big Five. Dupree capped off an incredible year by scoring her 1,000th career point, becoming just 14th player in Temple women's basketball history to do so.
In mid-January, the Wooden Award Committee will release the Midseason Top 20 List, followed in March by the official voting ballot, consisting of approximately 15 top players who have also maintained a 2.0 GPA. The 2006 Award ceremony will be held at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 8, 2006 and will be broadcast live on a national CBS telecast. The top five male and female finalists will be invited to Los Angeles for the Awards ceremony and will receive a contribution from the John R. Wooden Award Scholarship Fund in their name to their university's general scholarship fund.
