TEMPLE TO ADD MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
8.16.05 | General
PHILADELPHIA -- Temple University will add men's and women's cross country as varsity athletic programs starting with the 2005 season, announced Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. The addition of the two programs brings the University's total sports sponsorship to 24 teams.
"It is a great day for
"Temple has done an outstanding job developing its track program, but adding cross country will help attract more distance runners and fill a gap in that area of our program," said head men's and women's track coach Stefanie Scalessa. "I applaud the administration and President David Adamany for supporting this effort and I look forward to the challenge of developing the program."
Scalessa, who is in her second year at the helm of the Owls track programs, will look to revive two sports that last competed in 1985. Men's and women's cross country were two of eight sports removed from varsity status on May 13, 1986 in order to develop an expanded program of activities for all students, including recreational, intramural and club sports.
