DONATELLI LEADS MEN'S SOCCER TO FIRST WIN OF SEASON, 2-1, OVER VILLANOVA

PHILADELPHIA -- After scoring just once goal in losing their first four matches, the Temple Owls men's soccer team needed someone to step up- Big Time!  That is just what senior co-captain Tony Donatelli did, scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with 45 seconds to play in lifting Temple to a 2-1 win over city-rival Villanova Sunday at the Penn Soccer Classic.

Donatelli, who also assisted on the Owls' other tally, suffered an injury in the opening minutes of play, being pulled down in the box on an apparent foul.  The call was not made, and the 2004 Philadelphia Soccer Seven scoring leader hobbled through the remainder of the contest.

Head coach David MacWilliams shook up his lineup at the start of the contest in hopes of jump-starting his offense.  The Owls employed a starting 11 that included five freshmen, Jim Suevo, Bryant Hosler, Will Chevrollier, Tyler Goffi and Ben Marucci, as well as two reserves, David Suah and Miguel Ovelar.  The Cherry and White had the better of the match offensively after the first 45 minutes, out-shooting the Wildcats, 7-4, but, nonetheless, the contest was scoreless at intermission.

Finally, in the 47th minute of play, the Owls got on the scoreboard for their first goal in 343 minutes of action.  Marucci finished a rebound off a Donatelli shot, making it 1-0 Temple.  For Donatelli, it was his 17th career assist, moving him into a tie for sixth on the Owl career list with Franklin Gbinije (1982-85).

Senior Joe Brocker, moved to right half back from his normal center back position, picked up a red-card at the 81:35 mark, putting the Owls at a man disadvantage.  Villanova (1-3) would capitalize  at the 88:36 mark as Charlie Rowan headed the ball past Hosler (2 saves) from 18 yards out off a pass from Billy Whiteside.

Donatelli then put the finishing touches on the match, and the Owls' first win of 2005, blasting a penalty kick past 'Nova keeper Jason Friel (six saves) for the final score.

Temple (1-4) will next take on Drexel as part of a men's-women's soccer doubleheader at Ambler Field Wednesday afternoon.  The women open the day with a 2:00 p.m. match against Drexel with the men's match scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
