MEN'S SOCCER OPENS DEFENSE OF CITY TITLE WITH 2-1 WIN OVER DREXEL

9.14.05 | Men's Soccer

AMBLER, PA -- Temple opened defense of its Soccer Seven crown in style, tallying two first half goals en route to a 2-1 win over visiting Drexel Wednesday afternoon at Ambler Field in the league opener for both squads.  It marked the second straight win for the Owls over a city-rival as the Cherry and White (2-4) defeated Villanova Sunday.  Drexel falls to 1-2-1.

Senior co-captain Tony Donatelli opened the scoring with a strong individual move in the 12th minute.  The Owl midfielder broke through three Dragon defenders to go in alone on Nick Macri (three saves).  Donatelli blasted past the DU keeper and into the right corner from 15 yards out for his second goal of the season.

Donatelli then fed junior Ryan Heins on a breakaway goal.  Heins circled around a sprawled Macri and drilled it into the back of the net for his first tally of the season.  For Donatelli it was his third assist of the season and 18th of his career, moving him into tie for fourth on the all-time list with Jack Dietz (1974-77).  He is two assists way from the top slot which is shared by Peter Dicce (1982-85), Scott Rieber (1987-90) and Ray DeStephanis (1995-98).

Freshman Bryant Hosler made four saves in goal for Temple in posting his second win.  The only goal he allowed came off a defensive turnover when Andy Schneider stole the ball and scored in the 86th minute.

Temple next travels to Hartwick for a 7:00 p.m. contest Saturday night.
