PHILADELPHIA-After suffering a narrow loss to city rival Saint Joseph's on Friday night, the #17/19 Owls rebounded with a resounding 85-50 win over the visiting Massachusetts Minutewomen on Sunday afternoon at the Liacouras Center. Kamesha Hairston led four Temple players in double figures with 22 points and 12 rebounds, as the Owls scored a season-high 85 points. Khadija Bowens chipped in with 19 points, while Candice Dupree and Fatima Maddox earned 14 points a piece. Temple improves to 15-5 on the season and 6-2 in the A-10, while Massachusetts drops to 6-14 overall and 3-6 in Conference play.
The 85 points were the most scored in the Liacouras Center since the 2000 season, when the Owls scored 89 points against Lehigh on November 17, 2000.
Temple jumped out to an 8-0 lead to begin the game and never looked back. Pam Rosanio gave the Minutewomen their first points on the board when the sophomore sank a trey at 16:29. UMass seemed to pick up a little offensive motion, narrowing the gap to four points (15-11) at 11:05 but the Owls went on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 10 (23-13) with just under six minutes to play in the half. Temple continued to dominate and took a 32-21 advantage into the locker room. Lady Comfort grabbed 10 rebounds in the first stanza, while Maddox netted 10 points on four-of-nine shooting from the floor.
The Minutewomen shot 40% from the field in the second half, an improvement over the 30% that they earned in the first stanza, but UMass could get no closer than 16 points, as the Owls' lead swelled to as much as 38, thanks to a stifling 59% field goal percentage. 10 of 11 players earned points for the Owls, as Temple rolled to the 85-50 result.
Comfort finished with 11 rebounds, nine of which were defensive. Bowens tied a career high, dishing eight assists, in addition to her 19 points and two steals. Maddox and Ashley Morris each earned five assists on the day.
Kate Mills led the Minutewomen with 16 points, while Rosanio chipped in with 13 points and four assists.
TU continues its home stand when it hosts Richmond and Duquesne next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
