AMHERST, MA - The one thing Temple men's soccer team's struggling offense did not need was to run into a hot goalkeeper. That is just what the Owls came across Sunday afternoon as Massachusetts sophomore keeper Zack Simmons set a new school record with his 10th shutout of the season in posting a 2-0 win over the visiting Cherry and White at Rudd Field.
The Owls, who have scored just 10 goals over their first 13 matches, controlled play in the first half, out-shooting the Minutemen to the tine of seven shots to four, over the first 45 minutes. However it was UMass sophomore Prince Ofosu who was able to find the back of the net. Osafu accepted a cross from Tony Bassett in the 34th minute and lofted a shot over Owl sophomore keeper Bryant Hosler, who was charging off the goal line to make a stop.
UMass (8-5-3, 2-3-1) added an insurance goal at the 70:06 mark when Bassett sent a laser towards the back post beating Hosler (three saves). Simmons made five saves in lowering his goals against average to a measly 0.74.
Temple ended the game with an 11-8 shot advantage with freshman Mike Puppolo (three shots) leading the team.
Temple (2-10-1, 1-4-0 in Atlantic 10 play) returns to Ambler Field this weekend for its final two home matches. The Owls host Duquesne on Friday, October 20 at 3:00 p.m. and then honor their three seniors on Sunday when they take on Saint Louis (1:00 p.m.).
