AMBLER, PA - The Temple men's soccer team surrendered two first half goals and fell to visiting Duquesne Friday afternoon at the Ambler Field. The Dukes improve to 10-4-1 (5-1-0) on the season, while TU falls to 2-11-1 (1-4-0).
Both squads struggled with the field conditions early on, as heavy rain and strong winds forced the start of the game to be delayed 45 minutes. After much slipping and sliding, Duquesne's Travis McKenzie took a pass from Alex Trujillo and found Tom Sochacki deep in the Temple zone. Sochacki weaved through the Owl defense and pushed the ball past a challenging Owl keeper Bryant Hosler to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead 13 minutes in.
The Owls had a chance to respond minutes later when freshman J.T. Noone sent a cross to junior Eddie Romero, who had his shot saved by All-Atlantic 10 goalie Zach Varga.
Duquesne extended its lead to 2-0 in the 24th minute when Pat Flinn's header off a corner kick from Greg Annan found the back of the net.
Temple junior goalkeeper Tony Pratico, who relieved Bryant Hosler in the 31st minute, was able to keep the Owls within striking distance but the offense couldn't cut into the Duquesne lead. Varga frustrated the Owls all afternoon, turning away five shots.
Temple recorded 10 shots for the game to three for the Dukes.
The Owls will make their final appearance of the 2006 season at Ambler Field this Sunday afternoon when they take on St. Louis at 1:00 p.m.
