RALEIGH, N.C.- Kamesha Hairston laid the groundwork and Fatima Maddox gave the Owls a fighting chance as the senior scoring tandem scored 23 and 20 points, respectively in Temple's narrow 59-57 loss to NC State on Saturday afternoon. Hairston earned a double-double in the first half, collecting 15 points and 10 rebounds. Maddox scored 14 second-half points to lead TU back from a 15 point deficit and nearly tie the game. Temple drops to 3-3 on the year, while the Wolfpack improve to 6-2 overall.

Despite a slow start, Hairston had a monster half, earning a double-double in just 18 minutes of play. The senior collected 15 points and 10 rebounds, nine of which were defensive. NC State raced out to a 6-0 lead, holding Temple scoreless until a Lady Comfort lay-up at 15:51. The Owls struggled to hit outside shots and Comfort and Shenita Landry picked up two quick fouls a piece, shutting down the inside game. Luckily for Temple, the Wolfpack stumbled into a rough patch of their own, allowing the Owls to climb within one (14-13) at 9:02. A jumper by LaKeisha Eaddy at 8:33 gave TU its first lead of the game and Hairston added two more to make it 17-14 at 7:50. Ashley Key sank a trey at 5:43 to end the five-minute Wolfpack scoring drought and tie the game. Hairston sank two free throws to spark a 4-0 run and put the Owls ahead 23-19 with 3:30 remaining. NCSU went on an 8-0 run to end the half and take a 29-27 advantage at the half. Neither team had a particularly good shooting day from the field. The Owls made just 31% of their shots, while the Wolfpack sank 37% of their attempts. TU started off slow yet again, allowing NC State to go on a 4-0 run and take a 33-27 lead. As she did in the first stanza, Comfort broke the stalemate, with a lay-up at 17:51 to make it 33-29. The four-point differential held for most of the half until a 5-0 Wolfpack run made it 46-37 at the 11-minute mark. The Wolfpack continued to dominate, thanks to three straight treys by Keisha Brown, and led by as much as 15 at the eight-minute mark. Maddox desperately tried to keep the Owls in the game, scoring seven straight points to get Temple within nine (57-48) at 3:30. An Eaddy basket at the three minute mark cut NC State's lead to just seven (57-50).  Maddox and the Owls continued to push, going on a 7-0 run to make it a two-point game (59-57) with 26.4 seconds to go. Temple's full-court press forced the Wolfpack to use all of their time on the shot clock and just when the Owls thought they had possession, a foul was called on Jasmine Stone, giving NCSU a chance to seal the win. Khadijah Whittington missed both free throws, giving Temple a chance to tie or win. Hairston's last second shot attempt was no good and the Wolfpack scampered away with the 59-57 victory. Hairston finished with a career-high 16 rebounds and two steals. Maddox and Eaddy dished three assists a piece, while Stone grabbed eight boards. Temple out-rebounded NC State, 43-34. Brown led two Wolfpack players in double figures with 14 points, while Whittington finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Temple finally returns home to host Stony Brook on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins on Sunday afternoon.
