PHILADELPHIA- The Temple women's basketball team will look to avenge a narrow loss in New York last season when it returns home to host the Stony Brook Seawolves on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. This is the second meeting between the Owls and the Seawolves. Stony Brook leads the series 1-0, taking the last meeting, 58-56, on December 7, 2005.
Kamesha Hairston laid the groundwork and Fatima Maddox gave the Owls a fighting chance as the senior scoring tandem scored 23 and 20 points, respectively in Temple's narrow 59-57 loss to NC State on Saturday afternoon. Hairston earned a double-double in the first half, collecting 15 points and 10 rebounds. Maddox scored 14 second-half points to lead TU back from a 15 point deficit and nearly tie the game. Hairston finished with a career-high 16 rebounds and two steals. Maddox and LaKeisha Eaddy dished three assists a piece, while Jasmine Stone grabbed eight boards.
Hairston leads Temple in scoring and rebounding, averaging 21.8 ppg and 9.2 rpg. Maddox is second with 15.3 ppg. Shenita Landry and Lady Comfort are tied for second rebounds (5.7 rpg). Eaddy has dished a team-leading 21 assists thus far this season.
Jessica Smith tallied her second double-double of the season but Stony Brook committed 23 turnovers as they fell to No. 20/21 George Washington, 68-55, on Saturday afternoon. Stony Brook could not get any closer than two points and George Washington led by as many as 18 in the second half as they closed out the game 68-55. Smith led the way for the Seawolves with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Mykeema Ford scored 14 and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and Young had her best game in a Seawolf uniform as the transfer tallied nine points, nine rebounds and five steals.
Ford leads the Seawolves in scoring with 16.6 ppg, while Smith is chipping in with 15.4 ppg and a squad-leading 6.8 rpg. Ford is also tops in assists (20).
Friendly Competition
Dawn Staley, Maura McHugh and Lisa Boyer were all friends in a previous life. McHugh served as a coach with the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs from 1999-2003, a team that Staley faced with the Charlotte Sting. Before arriving in the WNBA, McHugh, Staley and Boyer all worked together as players or coaches in the ABL.
Player of the Week
After averaging a double-double of 26.5 points and 14.0 rebounds against two ACC opponents last week, Kamesha Hairston has been voted both the Atlantic 10 and Big Five Player of the Week. This is the first honor of the year for Hairston.
