TEMPLE CREW WINS BERGEN AND KELLY CUPS

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple Crew dominated the Schuylkill River Saturday afternoon, winning both the men's and women's varsity 8 races at the Bergen Cup Regatta. The Owls also were victorious in the men's second varsity eight and the men's novice four, while placing second in three other races.
The best race of the day by far was the women's varsity 8. Head coach Tim Hagan's crew overtook a strong Saint Joseph's crew at the finish line to win the Kelly Cup by a mere six one-hundredths of a second. The Owl boat was comprised of freshman Laura Altimari (bow), sophomore Amanda Barr (2), junior Rachel Jordan (3), junior Lauren Fattori (4), senior Kristen Herrmann (5), senior Nicole Warrick (6), senior Ulana Luciw (7), junior Steph Hanlin (stroke) and senior Sarah Evancho (cox), finished in a time of 6:35.36.
The Temple men's varsity eight, comprised of freshman Thomas Goldner (cox), graduate student Peter Gostling (stroke), sophomore James Harding (7-seat), junior Dante Cammarata (6), graduate student Chris Thomas (5), sophomore Tom Haubrich (4), sophomore Robert Protesto (3), senior T.J. Burke (2) and senior Mike Shisler (bow), led the entire race, winning by over four lengths over second place Drexel. The Owls second varsity eight of sophomore Rory Roberts (cox), senior Andreas Mantzoukas (stroke), junior Matt Hanlin (7), sophomore Bill Gennaro (6), sophomore Don Powers (5), junior Chris Bushek (4), sophomore Joseph Welch (3), junior Cy Haines (2) and junior Timothy Malloy (bow), also won convincingly over second-place Drexel, besting the Dragons by nearly 22 seconds.
The men's novice four comprised of freshman Michael Berger (cox), freshman Nicholas Khan (stroke), freshman William Weaver (3), junior Brendan Uhll (2) and freshman, Eric Alexander (bow) won easily over La Salle in a two-boat race, finishing nearly 50 seconds ahead of the Explorer crew.
The men's varsity four of freshman Michael Berger (cox), sophomore Sam Cunningham (stroke), sophomore Nicholas Vlahos (3), senior Jason Hart (2) and junior Aaron McHargue (bow) placed second in their race to La Salle.
On the women's side, Temple placed second in the second varsity eight as well as the novice eight. The second eight was comprised of senior Carrie Kelley (cox), sophomore Laura Austin (stroke), senior Emily Smith (7), junior Anne Mikolajewski (6), junior Leah Silverstein (5), junior Kate Guth (4), junior Nicole Toner (3), junior Sara Nguyen (2) and sophomore Jackie Swan (bow). The novice eight was comprised of freshman Jill Ploof (cox), freshman Jess Herrmann (stroke), freshman Laura Scullin (7), freshman Meghan Shirley (6), freshman Katie Reiersen (5), freshman Maria DiChiacchio (4), freshman Juliana Rausch (3), sophomore Danielle Britton (2) and freshman Amanda Concha (bow).
The women's novice four of Maureen McDermitt (cox), Jessica Herrmann (stroke), Katie Hoban (3), Carolyn Bailey (2) and Juliana Rausch (bow) took third in their race.
Earlier in the day the men's team rowed against two of the nation's top crews in Syracuse and Virginia. The Owls finished third in both the varsity eight and novice eight races while placing second in the second varsity eight.
The Temple women next take the water at the ECAC Metro Rowing Championships in Worcester, MA on May 6. The men are off until the Dad Vail Regatta on May 12-13.
