MEN'S TENNIS ENDS STELLAR SEASON WITH THIRD PLACE SHOWING AT A-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS

MONROEVILLE, PA -- The Temple men's tennis team pulled off another come-from-behind win, this time defeating seventh-seed Dayton, 4-3, Sunday to finish in third place at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship held at Club 4 Life. The fifth-seed Owls ended their season under first-year head coach Steve Mauro with a 17-8 record. The third place showing was the highest by an Owl team since a second-place finish in 2000.
Dayton opened the match by winning the first two matches of doubles play to take a 1-0 lead. The Owls rebounded to take the middle four singles matches, three coming after dropping the first sets, to pull out the victory.
Senior Milan Juricka and sophomore Philip Gegenheimer won their singles matches at second and fifth, respectively, to finish the 2006 campaign tied for the team-best in singles wins with 23. Juricka easily dispatched Rex Cabrera, 6-0, 6-2, to complete a perfect 4-0 run in singles play at the tournament. Gegenheimer dropped his first set, 3-6, to David Peyton, before recovering to win the final two sets by identical 6-2 scores.
Senior Daniel Davis and junior Matt Struble went the same route as Gegenheimer in posting wins at third and fourth singles. Davis dropped his first set at the third slot, 1-6, but turned it around with 6-2, 6-1 wins in the second and third sets to secure the win over Jamison Downs. Struble fell behind with a 3-6 loss in his first set only to rebound with 6-1, 6-4 wins in the final two sets to secure the Owls final point.
The third place finish was a nice ending to a tremendously successful season for the Owls under first-year coach Steve Mauro. Temple had a plus-14 improvement in the win column from last season's 3-11 finish.
