OWLS FINISH 11TH AT A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP

WINTER GARDEN, FL -- The Temple golf team shot a three-round 913 to finish 11th at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship, played May 5-7 at Orange County National Golf Club.  After carding an opening round 303 on Friday and a 312 Saturday, the Owls saved their best round for last, posting a 298 on Sunday.

 

Temple junior captain James Boose provided a team, tournament-best round of 71 on Sunday to finish tied for 35th in the 65-player field with a 223 (74-78-71) total.  Freshman Pat Rugg also performed well in his first league tourney, placing tied for 47th with a 228 (77-74-77) effort.  Freshman Adam Pifer and sophomore Kevin Busteed finished tied for 51st with 231 event showings.  Freshman Justin Masters rounded-out the Cherry & White scorecard, placing 59th with a 243-stroke tally.

 

Charlotte held off a third-round surge from Xavier to claim the Championship.  The 49ers shot a 12-under par 276 on the par 72, 6,837-yard Panther Lake course on Sunday.  Xavier was 15-under for the final round, led by John Streibich and his tournament-low score of 66.  The 49ers won the team title by three strokes over the Musketeers with their 54-hole total of 837.  Rhode Island placed third with an 857, followed by Richmond in fourth place with an 859 and George Washington in fifth place with an 860.  St. Bonaventure (865), Saint Joseph's (875), Dayton (885), Saint Louis (890), Fordham (909), Duquesne (916), and La Salle (964) rounded-out the field.

 

The 49ers placed all five golfer among the top nine finishers, led by Ray Sheedy and Matt Mincer, who were third and fourth, respectively, with scores of 209 and 210. Andrew DiBitetto and Jonas Enander Hedin tied for fifth with 211's and Trevor Murphy tied for ninth with a 212.

 

Streibich and teammate Jason Kokrak tied for medalist honors with 10-under par 206's. For Kokrak, it marks the second year in a row that he shared medalist honors.  Along with the Charlotte quintet, they were joined on the All-Conference team by Jesse Larson of Rhode Island (t-5th, 211), junior John Pelet of Richmond (t-5th, 211), Jordan Utley of Richmond (t-9th, 212), Andy Pope of Xavier (t-9th, 212), and Dan Mirabella of George Washington (t-9th, 212).  

 

Eighteen golfers finished at or below par for the Championship.
