PHILADELPHIA -- Shawn Kleitz, who served the previous two years as Director of Development for Temple's School of Dentistry, has been named Associate Athletic Director for Development at the University, Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw announced today.  Kleitz will oversee annual fund operations and major gift solicitation while providing assistance to the Director of Athletics and administering the Athletic Advisory Board and Owl Club.

"Shawn brings a wealth of experience to the Temple athletic staff," Bradshaw said. "He is not only a successful fundraiser, but he also comes with a strong understanding about the University community as well as our donor base."

Kleitz began his Temple career in September 2002 as the Director of Development for the College of Education.  Under his guidance, the College of Education not only exceeded its $1 million annual fundraising goal within nine months, but doubled its yearly ambitions in raising more than $2 million.  During his tenure, the College of Education also increased its total gifts and pledges by 30%; increased its cash by 83%; and produced the college's newsletter that reached 38,000 alumni.

In 2004, Kleitz moved over to the School of Dentistry, where he managed a development operation with a $1.5 million annual budget.  His responsibilities included creating and managing the Board of Visitors, establishing and supervising alumni affairs special events, forming and stewarding the school's scholarship program, and supervising its annual fund.

Kleitz arrived at Temple following two years of service as the Director of Development for the Marble Collegiate Church in New York.  While with the Marble Collegiate Church, Kleitz directed a major donor fundraising initiative of $1.5 million, organized and managed special events holding an average fundraising goal of $100,000; and oversaw the direct mailing campaign reaching 15,000 people.

From 1995-2000, Kleitz served as the interim director and business administrator of The Children's Storefront School in New York.  At the nonprofit, tuition-free elementary school, he was integral in raising and managing the annual $2.3 million budget, co-authoring the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) evaluation report, supervising a technology plan's initial stages while using $300,000 in funding and in-kind donations, as well as coordinating an annual, 700-person fundraising event that achieved a net goal of $500,000.

A newcomer to athletic development, but not to athletics, Kleitz was an assistant men's soccer coach at the University of Hartford (1991-92) under head coach Sasho Cirvoski.  An all-State soccer play at the high school level in the early '80s., he also coached gold-medal winning high school soccer teams at the Nutmeg Games in 1991 and 1992.

Kleitz, a Storrs, Conn. native, received a bachelor's of arts degree in English from the University of Connecticut in 1988. He resides in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia with his wife Colette and four-year-old twin sons, Aidan and Liam.
