Sept. 13, 2006
AMBLER, PA - Chris Sardon blasted a shot into the upper left hand corner five minutes into the overtime period to lead the Hartwick men's soccer team over the Temple Owls on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls fall to 1-4-1while the Hawks improve to 3-3-1.
Play was extremely physical in the first half, with Temple committing seven fouls and Hartwick earning five. The Hawks blasted three tough shots toward the net early but were unable to put the ball past Owl goalkeeper Bryant Hosler. Temple regrouped and was able to find an offensive rhythm but could not convert, allowing the score to stand 0-0 at the half.
Both teams came out firing in the early minutes of the second stanza, with the Hawks nearly taking a 1-0 lead just a minute and a half into the half. HC's Kipp Erskine found himself open right in front of the net but kicked the ball right to Hosler for the easy save. Sensing the urgency, Hartwick continued to knock on the door and rattled off four shots in the next five minutes. The Hawks sent a corner kick into the far left corner but Kurt Walsh was there to clear it off the line. Three more shots went wide. It seemed that Temple was back on its heels but the Owls weren't finished yet. TU continued to fight and Francois Sagna gave the Owls its best shot to score when he blasted a ball off the high post in the 68th minute. The squads traded shots and the Hawks used a corner in the 77th minute to nearly put it in again but this time it was Mike Minai that was there to clear it off the line. Though each team had its chances, neither squad could find the back of the net and the game went into overtime.
The Hawks took control in the overtime period and were able to earn the win with just five minutes remaining. Sardon played the ball down from the air and volleyed it into the upper left hand corner for the win.
Hosler earned three saves in the loss, while Joe Gibson tallied two.
Temple begins Atlantic 10 play on September 16 when it hosts La Salle at 2 p.m.
