Women's Tennis Opens Season at ODU Invitational

NORFOLK, VA - - The Temple women's tennis team opened its season with a solid effort at the ODU Invitational this past weekend. Freshmen Radka Ferancova and Christine Clermont won their singles draws while sophomore Felicia Frazier won the consolation round of her singles flight.
Following a first round bye in the B singles draw, Ferancova, a native of Lucenec, Slovania, defeated Hannah Hinton, a senior from the University of Cincinnati, 6-4, 6-1. She followed that with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over Longwood's Ashley Melson. Ferancova won her draw with an easy 6-0, 6-2 victory over Longwood's Laura Simon.
Clermont, a native of Miami Shore, Fla., had little trouble in her four matches. She debuted with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Elizabeth Young of Cincinnati. A 6-1, 6-1 win over Megan Crook (Virginia Wesleyan) followed. In the semifinals, she topped Catherine Phillips of James Madison, 6-0, 6-2. Clermont downed Cincinnati's Alizee Patradis, 6-2, 6-3, to win the C singles draw.
Senior Yuri Kurashima won her first two matches, before defaulting to Old Dominion's Larissa Santos due to injury in the semifinals of the A single draw. Sharanya Pattabi won her first match easily before falling in a super tiebreaker to Ekaterina Kuznetzova of Liberty in B singles.
Another Temple freshman, Whitney Tillman, was victorious in her debut, defeating Virginia Wesleyan's Lisa Fanney, 6-2, 6-3. Tillman lost her second match to Lindsay Williford (Cincinnati).
Temple next competes at the Cissie Leary Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania starting Saturday.
