EASTON, PA - The Temple men's soccer broke a scoreless streak of over 500 minutes, tallying twice, but it was not enough as host Lafayette scored the first three goals in the contest Tuesday night at Bourger '44 Field to post a 3-2 win. The Leopards improved to 4-1-1 on the season while the Owls fall to 1-6-1.
Kevin Miller opened the scoring in the 20th minute, picking up a loose ball at midfield and making a long run before firing it past Temple keeper Bryant Hosler from six yards out. Mike Tilley gave the Leopards a two-goal advantage when he headed home a free kick off the foot of Thomas Harju at the 28:33 mark.
Miller scored his second goal of the game - and season - when he put in a rebound off a shot by Scott Hawkins in the 52nd minute. Hosler had made the initial save, on eof six in the game for the sophomore goalkeeper.
Freshman J.T. Noone finally put the Owls on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute, snapping a 568-minute scoreless streak. Noone's first collegiate goal came off a nice pass in the box by junior Eddie Romero. Senior Matt Maher notched his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 88th minute to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Leopards held off the Owls final charge to secure the win.
Temple opens its Atlantic 10 Conference season against Charlotte at Ambler Field on Friday, September 29 (3:30 p.m.).
