PHILADELPHIA - - The Temple University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics was named as one of five recipients of the 2006 1A Athletic Directors Association Sportsmanship Award. The Award, in its first year of existence, is given to the Athletic Departments that best embraces sportsmanship and the principles that embody fair play, diversity and community service. Temple was joined by Clemson University, North Carolina State University, the University of Pittsburgh and Washington University as the inaugural recipients of the award from among the 119 Division 1A member schools.
"This is a proud day for entire Temple University community, student-athletes, administrators, coaches and fans, to be recognized as the recipient of the first 1A Sportsmanship Award," Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw stated. "Sportsmanship is something every intercollegiate athletic program strives for, and something we instill in our student-athletes through a variety of programs from Day One. To be singled out in this, the first year of the award, is truly an honor."
It was under Bradshaw's leadership that the Temple Teammates Sportsmanship program, created in 2002, began to flourish. Temple Teammates is conducted by the Athletics Department to raise the consciousness and awareness on aspects of leadership, positive character development and high ethical standards. Teaching, mentoring and playing sports with younger students are ways of imparting appropriate values, and developing positive examples of good sportsmanship - for both the teacher and the learner.
The Owl Outreach Community Service Program, a component of Temple Teammates, has been recognized for its outstanding contributions to the Philadelphia community by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports, The School District of Philadelphia, The Police Athletic League of Philadelphia, Special Olympics of Philadelphia and numerous other civic organizations in the Philadelphia area.
As members of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program for the past eight years, Temple University has consistently shown its commitment to the holistic development of its student athletes. Through a balance of academics, athletics and service, Temple student-athletes continue a proud tradition of leadership, community outreach and learning.
