Temple Blanks George Mason In Final Match of VCU Invitational

The Temple University men's tennis team posted its first win of the spring campaign, defeating George Mason, 5-0, in its final match of the VCU Invitational. Second-year head coach Steve Mauro's team opened the season Saturday with consecutive losses to East Tennessee State (5-0) and preseason A-10 favorite Charlotte (5-0).
The Owls (1-2) swept through the Patriots, winning all 10 sets of the match, Sophomore Nathan Spunda bested Anastas Budagov, 6-1, 6-1, at first singles. Senior Matt Struble downed Dan Schneider, 6-4, 7-5, in the closest match of the afternoon. Junior Philip Gegenheimer, playing his first singles match of the tournament, defeated Jay Friedman, 6-1, 6-0, while junior Zach Tobias took the fourth singles slot, 7-5, 6-0, over Joradn Lipstock. The Owls team of sophomore Eduardo Saavedra and freshman Pavlos Stephanides was victorious over the GMU team of Martin Brown and Imran Nayeem, 6-3, 6-3.
Temple next hosts Saint Francis (NY) at the Cheltenham Tennis Club on Saturday, January 27 (6:00 p.m.).
